After 38 yrs what a nose, opened and drank without decanting. The palate was elegant and lasting but faded after an hour. The nose continued to mystify.
Very nice color, typical Bdx on the nose. Medium bodied and a fantastic wine. Tasted on a magnum. This can easily cellar for another 10 years.
Six-vintage vertical: ‘03, 01, 95, 90, 88 and 83 in magnum. All bottles showed spectacularly well. These were all decanted 3-4 hours in advance.
My top 3: ‘90, 95 and 83 & 88 (tied). The 01 and 03 just needs a bit more time to fully resolve.
Lafite is more about elegance and refinement than power.
4.8. The second of the Grand Vins from Château Lafite Rothschild at the Grand Cru Society dinner last Monday, and my WOTN. This is some stunning juice! 81% Cab Sauv and 19% Merlot. Blackberry, vanilla, licorice, BBQ meat, and graphite with charred cedar. Beautifully structured!
This was an incredible experience at a very generous tasting. Dark cherry, plum, granite, minerality, earth, oak, baking spice.
Not your everyday wine, or even your every year wine. Absolute Bordeaux perfection.
